I grew up in the mountains near your homeland. My folks still live in Mountain Park, NM, just other side of mountain from the reservation.
Three Rivers/White Mountain Wilderness, which is just in shadows of the Mescalero Nation, is my favorite place in the world. I've probably unknowingly wandered onto the reservation a few times while backpacking in the area It is a very special place. I consider it sacred. I was always told the Mescaleros considered Sierra Blanca sacred too, but I never heard any confirmation of this.
I've never really met the people, the Mescaleros. Growing up in Alamogordo, I never met a single one. Encounters with the Mescalero staff at Ski Apache don't really count as a meeting. And I have lived in Austin since, as you do now. Small coincidence.
Wow, this is such a thrill, even if it is only in cyberspace.
Do you have that beautiful mane of dark shiny hair that Apaches are noted for? Since we are on the topic of beautiful brunettes?

Most people think I look Scottish or German. I'm Melungion. Fascinating story really - 15 years ago or so they discovered "Scotch/Irish" Appalachian folks coming down with Mediterranean based familial diseases. They ran a DNA scan and found Spanish, Portagee, Amer Indian, Turkish, Jewish, Arab, Berber and Congon African...
Simple, and vastly oversimplified summary: As Spain was driving the Moors out, and performing the Inquisition, they impressed Jews and Arabs to serve as galley slaves to the New World. Often, as their ships were filled willed with a variety of goods - they dropped these slaves off in the New World to fend for themselves. There were also several hundred that escaped, along with a few ships of shipwrecked Portagee sailors. The theory is that - they, along with everyone who wasn't eventally english, including escaped slaves - fled into the mountains of Appalachia, and intermarried with the native population.

As for me, take 1/4 Japanese, 1/4 British, 1/8 both Dutch and German, and add to that a smattering of Russian, shake well until mixture is dark haired, dark eyed, and fair skinned. Add 1 twisted sense of humor, 18+ years of education, 1 smart mouth, and equal amounts of both extraversion and compassion and let mature for 39 years.
....still waiting to see what the final product will turn out to be.
