Fri, September 25, 2009 - 1:08 PMSounds great! So? Where do WE start? -
-
Re: Such a great group but.....
Fri, September 25, 2009 - 4:34 PMAnywhere you would like. What is your preference...Religion, politics, sports, sex, relationships....? Other than sports, I am happy and willing to talk about anything (I am not well versed in most sports, but am always an eager study.) -

Re: Such a great group but.....
Fri, September 25, 2009 - 6:27 PMOk, I'll start, although it seems like I might just be purposely stepping into something bad. I don't like any of Obama's policies. If you disagree, and I know many of you do, pick one and tell me why you like it. I love to debate. -
-
Re: Such a great group but.....
Fri, September 25, 2009 - 8:03 PMhe's in uncharted territory. he knows not all of his options are going to work, but at least he's doing something. no one has come up with any better or politically viable options to what he's doing. he's leading. he doesn't know where he's leading us to... it's more a matter of him leading us away from what clearly has not worked.
i'm glad i'm not in his shoes. -
-
Re: Such a great group but.....
Fri, September 25, 2009 - 11:12 PMYou might be right about him not knowing what he's doing, Slack. It probably looks like that to people that are paying attention. I think that's a very optimistic point of view, though, and I quit being optimistic about politicians a few decades ago. But I believe he does know where he's trying to take us, and it's not a good place. Change for the sake of change is not always going to be a good thing.
Hope and Change. The way I explained that to my lovely lady here is this. You've got a guy sitting on the curb, begging for money because he has fallen through the holes in the safety net, and he has no choice in the matter. Not a good situation, I think we would all agree. So you want to change things, because this isn't working. So you pick him up and put him in the middle of the fast lane on a busy freeway, and you hope he doesn't get run over by a truck. There's your hope and your change. Is he in a better situation? No, just a different one.
One place he is taking us is into the poorhouse. There is no way to pay for what he's trying to do. Not to mention the loss of freedoms as he marches us down the road to socialism. I should probably be the one that's least worried about the debt piling up, since none of my kids will be paying for it. Or my grandkids. Because I have none. It's the people with kids that are going to be shouldered with out of control inflation and huge debt that should be upset. I guess I just feel a bit of financial responsibility is in order. Don't look to me to stand up for the way that things have been done in the past, I didn't like that either, but this is just wrong. If anyone wants to get specific in the policies that they support, I would welcome that. -

Re: Such a great group but.....
Sat, September 26, 2009 - 4:14 PMLester, with all due respect I wonder why you are blaming President Obama for the issues we are facing as a nation financially? He interited MOST of it from an inept, egomaniacal liar. If you look closely at the facts you will see that the Iraq and Afganistan wars, Medicare part D, and tax cuts for the wealthiest 1 % of the nation is what created the hole we now find ourselves in. Instead of holding accountable the man responsible we blame the man trying to clean up the mess. This is akin to convicting the janitor for mopping up the blood after the murder.
President Obama is accounting for every single expenditure in his budget. George Bush never did, he simply added it to the deficit.
I do have a son that I am raising to understand everything there is to know about the world he is growing up in. The good, the bad and the ugly. I want him to understand that sometimes to achieve what we want, we have to go through a little pain. I am teaching him to take responsibilities for his actions whether good or bad. I only wish that instead of retiring to sunny Texas and living a life of leisure, George W. Bush would have taken responsibility for the mess HE left our children and grandchildren to clean up.
I am not saying that Barack Obama is perfect or the "second coming", but he is a brilliant man and I believe he is what is best for this country. Sadly, I am not sure he will have a chance to prove it. -

Wed, September 30, 2009 - 11:31 PMIt is a problem, but I don't think there's anything we can do about it. China has limits on how many kids you can have (two I think), but we're not communists. -

Thu, October 1, 2009 - 12:01 AMChina has a limit, ONE child, but in their culture the 1st born would be ideally a male,, that's why they have such a high rate of female babies up for adoption,, but eventually that will kick in, to a negative population growth,, hopefully.. and look out for India,, they are projected to surpass China in population growth by 2010,, BILLIONS of bodies,, Ow the numbers make my head spin,, -

No idea what this has to do with beautiful brunettes, but here you go........
Tue, October 6, 2009 - 4:45 AM....from Ehrlich.....enjoy:
"The battle to feed humanity is over. In the 1970s, the world will undergo famines. Hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now. Population control is the only answer. -- Paul Ehrlich, in The Population Bomb (1968)"
"I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000. -- Paul Ehrlich, 1969"
"In ten years all important animal life in the sea will be extinct. Large areas of coastline will have to be evacuated because of the stench of dead fish. -- Paul Ehrlich, Earth Day 1970"
"Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make, ... The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years. -- Paul Ehrlich in an interview with Peter Collier in the April 1970 of the magazine Mademoiselle."
"By 1985 enough millions will have died to reduce the earth's population to some acceptable level, like 1.5 billion people. -- Paul Ehrlich, 1969"
"By 1980 the United States would see its life expectancy drop to 42 because of pesticides, and by 1999 its population would drop to 22.6 million. -- Paul Ehrlich, 1969"
And here's my favorite story:
In 1980 an American economist, Julian Simon resolved to show Ehrlich up. He set up a bet wherein he would sell Ehrlich $1,000 dollars worth of any five commodities that Ehrlich chose. Ehrlich would hold the commodities for ten years. If the prices rose -- meaning scarcity -- Simon would buy the commodities back from Ehrlich at the higher price. If the prices fell, Ehrlich would pay Simon the difference. Professor Ehrlich jumped at the bet, noting that he wanted to "accept the offer before other greedy people jumped in."
In October 1990, Ehrlich paid Simon a check for $570.07. As Simon had predicted, free markets provided lower prices and more options. Simon would have won even if prices weren't adjusted for inflation.
Simon offered to raise the wager to $20,000 and use any resources at any time that Ehrlich preferred. Ehrlich refused, and later claimed that he was "goaded into making a bet with Simon on a matter of marginal environmental importance." -

Re: No idea what this has to do with beautiful brunettes, but here you go........
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 12:52 AMAND now maybe we might like to re: look at some of his predictions,,, how's about the melting Arctic Ice ? The vanishing Glaciers, see Greenland,, both Poles,, ,,And what about fresh water world wide? Overpopulation , the changing sea currents. that encircle the planet,?? If that chain of water/sea current flows are interrupted,, serious impact ..
Look at California for example,, see the rising population,, legal and illegal,,, the 9th largst Economy in the world,, is crashing in huge debt,, HOW ARE WE, as responsible Humans,, to face the simple fact that the Planet IS overpopulated? do you deny this is true?
China has over a Billion People,,and India will surpass China soon,, very soon,,, any suggestions as to how to deal with this load of humaity on the planet?
Can you argue the impact of humanity on the planet we rely upon?? AND when we start to give SERIOUS CONSIDERATION to OVERPOPULATION?? -
-
Miss Phae, you're a doomsdayer, and that's ok, but......
Wed, October 7, 2009 - 1:50 AM........repeating the same shit over and over (like Ehrlich has been for 40 years) doesn't make it any more true. Let's say for the sake of argument that you're right about overpopulation......
"China has over a Billion People,,and India will surpass China soon,, very soon,,, any suggestions as to how to deal with this load of humaity on the planet? "
Here's what I suggest: Teach people in 3rd world shitholes to stop breeding like rats.
"Look at California for example,, see the rising population,, legal and illegal,,, the 9th largst Economy in the world,, is crashing in huge debt,"
It's mostly illegal. I would know. I'm a native. And a lot of natives are leaving. And why is CA crashing in huge debt? -

Re: Such a great group but.....
Sun, September 27, 2009 - 10:36 AMI thought I had mentioned it here, but in looking back, it must have been somewhere else. I am no fan of George Bush. And I would not have wanted McCain to be President, either. In my perfect world, we would have 3 or 4 truly qualified candidates to choose from each time, instead of holding my nose as I fill out my absentee ballot. Besides, it matters not even a tiny bit who I vote for in the Presidential race, since I live in California, and all of the electoral votes from this giant state go to the Democrat every time anyway.
Having said that, I will agree with you that the deficits run up by the wars, Medicare, and other tremendous wastes of federal money are a contributing factor to the debt problem. But the present recession was began in large part by the real estate market crash, fueled by the sub-prime lending spree, which was forced upon the lenders by Bill Clinton and his Congress.
Now, I have a question for you. You say that Barack Obama is a brilliant man. How do you come to that conclusion? Was it his SAT scores? Maybe his college transcripts? Or his brilliant writings when he was in charge of the Harvard Law Review? Sorry, I can't help but be a smartass sometimes. I mean no disrespect to you personally, Sia, but his history is so covered up, what do we really know about him? I mean, other than his undying love and respect for admitted terrorists and communists. -
-
Re: Such a great group but.....
Sun, September 27, 2009 - 4:38 PMI find him to be a brilliant man because I have actively listened to what he says when he speaks. He makes sense, does not sugar coat facts (IMHO), and his ideas and ideals are exactly what this country needs. Again, this is MY opinion as I happen to be a Democrat and have desperately hoped for decent leadership for this country as I believe Obama will be. (I will not even start on the public health care option, because I know that will just begin a firestorm. ;-), but suffice to say that he is completely on the right track. *Codicil-my opinion again.
Your opinion differs about President Obama and I respect your right to have that, but you claim "his history is so covered up" which I am confused about. I did an extensive web search and found more than plenty about his history from his childhood to Law School to lower government to now...so where is the cover up? Please, I beg you not to begin with the "birther" nonsense or I will sadly have to bang my head against my desk and I prefer not to have a bruise on my forehead. Honestly, Lester...what do we REALLY know about anyone? I could give a laundry list of former presidents and candidates who have skeletons in their closets, but why waste our time? No one is perfect and everyone has something about them, their morals, ideas, lifestyle, et al that someone else is not going to agree with. Some are more adept at hiding those skeletons, but those who are public servants or aspire to be are going to have them exposed. For another example on the other side of the coin, just look at John McCain.....he was a member of the infamous Keating Five, called his wife the "C" word in public in front of the press, and is so out of touch with reality he could not send an email if his life depended on it.
Another thing I am confused about is your assertion that President Obama has "undying love and respect for admitted terrorists and communists." Other than William Ayres, which you cannot possibly ever convince me that he had/has anything other than a passive acquaintence with, who are you talking about? What other terrorists and communists has he such high respect for?
We can go round and round the mulberry bush debating the same things over and over again with just different subtext and syntax but the outcome will always be the same for people who are passionate about their beliefs. Like you, I love a healthy debate and nothing gets my blood going more than a hearty political discussion. It is only when it denegrates into personal attacks that the usefulness of the conversation has run it's course.
Thank you for beginning and continuing a great conversation with respectfulness and courtesy. It is refreshing not to see anyone attacked for sharing their views however different from someone else's they might be. -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Such a great group but.....
Sun, September 27, 2009 - 8:32 PMAnd I appreciate you doing the same, Sia. So many people just want to throw personal attacks at each other, without refuting anything that has been said. I do tend to look both at the people that someone aligns themselves with, and how certain people speak of someone in power. Before I go any further I should probably say that I despise communism and socialism, and don't believe anybody should be in a position of power in this country that supports or aspires to either. Some people can argue with that point of view, and I welcome that also. But, having said that, do I need to go down the list of "Czars" that Obama has appointed, (without any Constitutional authority to do so), that are either admittedly or arguably lean towards communism or socialism? I will if you want me to, but it's there for you to look up if you like. As for the people that look up to Obama, I'll leave you with a quote.
"I was standing on the Washington Mall on Inauguration Day, alongside nearly two million other people on Inauguration Day, and proudly watched the first African American take the oath of office in our nation’s history. That alone made the day deeply memorable, joyful, and historic. But I couldn’t help but think – and I’m sure that millions of others had the same thought – that the transfer of power from Bush to President Obama not only tore down a barrier that once was thought near impenetrable, but also signified the fading away of one era and the beginning of another.
It was hard not to think on that cold day in our nation’s capital that the worst of the past 30 years of right wing extremist rule is behind us and that an era of progressive change is within reach, no longer an idle dream.
Just look at the new lay of the land: a friend of labor and its allies sits in the White House. Larger Democratic majorities control Congress. A feeling of renewal and hope is in the air. Public opinion polls show a high favorability rating for our new President. And the labor and people’s movement that was so instrumental to the election’s outcome, after a short holiday pause, is off and running."

Re: Such a great group but.....
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 3:28 PMConcerning Obama,
I like him but I do question his handling of this whole health care debate.
We have been debating this health care thing ever since he came into office. I agree that it needs to be reformed, but we have other problems to address right now. How much time and money should we spend on a debate that is going nowhere? People have tried to reform health care for years and years before him and nothing has gotten done.
Health care companies and big pharma are in too many people's pockets for any reform to get done anytime soon.
I suspect that this whole health care thing is a big tail wagging the dog thing to distract the country from other problems like the war and the economy. If that is the case, then it's a great move. -
-
Re: Such a great group but.....
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 5:19 PMPolitical gamesmanship type move, I mean. Designed to keep his approve ratings up and minds off the war that is going from bad to worse. -

-
Re: Such a great group but.....
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 6:31 PMHis poll numbers are down but if Afghanistan was the focus then it would be WAY down. Violence in Afghanistan is at an all time high, that kind of thing kills approval ratings, regardless of who started it. I'm just saying that I think he's playing the political game more then anything else when it comes to the health care debate. -
-
Re: Such a great group but.....
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 10:33 PMSo how do we get the focus onto Afghanistan, so we can watch the numbers hit rock bottom? I mean, without letting him take over one sixth of the economy and ruin it?

Re: Such a great group but.....
Thu, October 1, 2009 - 8:09 PMIn all seriousness, I think Joe the Plumber could do a better job than Obama. My theory is that we could have a better government if we just pulled names out of a hat for all the various offices. Sun, September 27, 2009 - 9:20 PMI agree with you Quaydin. Which beautiful brunette would you like to discuss? Actually, this was an enjoyable discussion for me, because nobody was calling names and screaming "idiot" at each other. Much more polite than most of the political tribes. Personally, I don't have to hate someone just because I disagree with their politics. Some people do. -

Ok. Now that the name calling and idiot branding are out of the way...
China is experiencing negative population growth. So is Japan. Muslim nations, on the other hand, are exploding. Even Catholic nations are keeping pace with them. Anybody want to grab this lightning rod?
Brunettes:
Angelina Jolie (depending on the season)
Catherine Zeta Jones
Jessica Alba -
-
Re: Such a great group but.....
Tue, September 29, 2009 - 10:15 AMMe? Looking forward to an attack? I would welcome being attacked by you Slack, but not just name calling.
As for the brunettes, I guess I come up short when trying to name them, because I don't know the names of the beautiful brunettes I see every day as I go through life. I don't pay much attention to celebrities at all, as Hollywood and the world of music are pretty much revolting to me these days. I do have to agree with the vote for Milla Jovovich, though. She is a doll.
Islam. One of my pet peeves. Many European nations are having major problems with Islam. Islam isn't exactly the religion of peace that some of them claim it to be. Anybody that wants to argue that with me, please read the Quran, then get back to me. And as they gain majority status in nation after nation, they immediately want to turn each nation into a theocracy. Women are treated as chattel, to be bought and sold to the highest bidder to old men, claiming that it is a legitimate marriage. I see no redeeming quality in the religion, and I see it to be one of the worst things ever to happen to mankind. Keep in mind that I am not defending other religions when I say this, as I am not a religious person. Of course, all of this is only my opinion, everyone else is completely entitled to their own opinion, and I of course welcome a discussion about it.
If I offended any Muslims by stating my opinion, I do not offer any apologies. If you are one of what some people like to call "peaceful" and "loving" Muslims, you are not a Muslim as far as I am concerned. Just as someone who does not follow the teachings of Christ cannot be called a Christian, if one doesn't follow the teachings of Mohammed, they cannot be called a Muslim. Once again, just my opinion.
